Samacheer Kalvi, which was said to be a simplified version of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) pattern and matriculation syllabus, might have been the main reason for the increase in pass percentage in the recently concluded public examinations in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. But, it may be a thing of past in Puducherry soon as the government is seriously contemplating of introducing CBSE stream in all government schools.

It means that private higher secondary schools which are following Samacheer Kalvi syllabus for the last three years will also have to switch over to the CBSE mode of education.

Chief Minister N. Rangasamy told The Hindu after presenting the budget proposals for 2013-14 here that the government was seriously contemplating the introduction of CBSE mode in all government schools.

An expert committee to prepare perspective plan and examine the feasibility to start CBSE pattern of education would be constituted. It found a mention in the budget also.

The committee would study all aspects of Samacheer Kalvi and the advantages of CBSE.

"We are in a position to provide quality and superior pattern of education to students of Puducherry. They should be able to perform well in nationally acclaimed higher education. We have to come out with a better education system to help them shine well in their career," Mr. Rangasamy said.

The Chief Minister said he had received inputs that enrolment rate in government schools had been dwindling in the recent past. The problem was visible in rural areas also. People opted for private English medium schools. Hence, the government had to find ways to solve the issue and regain the confidence of parents and students. Introduction of CBSE pattern of education in government schools might offer a solution, Mr. Rangasamy said.

On the failure of payment of Perunthalaivar Kamarar Financial Assistance Scheme for students of medical and engineering courses for the last two years, Mr. Rangasamy said he was committed to implementing the scheme. A sum of Rs.57 crore had been allocated for payment of tuition fees.

About Rs. 12 crore would be released within 3 to 4 days. Similarly, it was proposed to set up a committee for revamping the courses and have a centralised placement cell for all arts and science colleges.
